Culverts and Bridges
In most Canadian provinces, design guidelines exist to ensure that culverts and bridges are properly built. For example, in Ontario, as per regulation 104/97, professional engineers are expected to follow the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code, the Ontario Structure Inspection Manual and the Structural Manual. In Quebec, standards are rendered easily accessible and includes the Manuel de conception des ponceaux and the Manuel de conception des structures. In Nova Scotia however, standards design guidelines aren’t available. While professional engineers are expected to ensure their design meet certain expectations pertaining to fish passage and other environmental specifications, the absence of precise governmental guidelines lead to a variety of designs, not all equally efficient.
In the absence of precise governmental design guidelines, Ròs Engineering still follows the codes and regulations from other provincial governments such as Ontario and Quebec to ensure all the our “T”s are crossed. We also take it a notch further by aligning ourselves with the ecosystems surrounding the area of the work to ensure the proper migration of aquatic organisms along the river, following the basis of ecohydraulics.
