Dam Safety
In Canada, only seven provinces out of ten have adopted specific dam regulatory framework regarding dam safety. Those provinces are British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador and the Northwest Territories. In the Maritimes, while there is no regulatory framework in place, the Canadian Dam Association Dam Safety Guidelines provide valuable tools and information to facilitate and properly manage the risks associated with dam infrastructure. However, the following of those guidelines is left to the discretion of the dam owners.
Knowing that Nova Scotia has approximatively 200 dams, New Brunswick has about 240 dams and Newfoundland and Labrador has more than 700 dams within their limits, Dam Safety is a pressing matter that have to be taken seriously, especially as climate changes are being felt more and more strongly. We want to do our part to keep people safe and we therefore aim to make dam engineering more affordable for private dam owners.
